THE POSITION: The Preservation League of New York State, based in Albany, New York is seeking an energetic, organized, creative, staff member with excellent communication and social media skills, to support the Leagues Public Policy and Communications Programs. The Public Policy Associate will conduct research on public policy issues impacting historic preservation in New York State and assist in synthesizing that information for use in advocacy and communications campaigns. This position is integral to identifying, managing, and regularly communicating with multiple constituent groups of the League including developers, preservation professionals, elected officials, donors, and others. The candidate must have a strong interest/proficiency in public policy, research, writing, social media and electronic communications. The position reports to the Preservation Leagues Vice President for Policy and Preservation and the Director of Strategic Communications. This is a full-time position located in Albany, New York and requires travel within New York State.

Responsibilities-Public Policy (60%)

Monitor bills and policies at the local, state and federal level of interest to the Preservation League and our colleagues.
Track relevant legislation and prepare regular reports for staff and partners.
Compile and analyze data for public policy advocacy based on the Leagues annual public policy agenda.
Work with senior staff to prepare and distribute PowerPoints, articles, electronic postings, emails, social media and other methods for communicating with key constituencies to keep them informed of the Leagues work.
Organize and lead conference calls and online discussions.
Coordinate workshops on historic tax credits.
Collect and write case studies related to advocacy issues.
Identify and maintain strategic alliances relating to the Leagues policy agenda, including elected officials, colleagues, developers, architects, and others with an interest in preservation policy.
Schedule meetings with elected and appointed officials and prepare for and participate in those meetings when needed.
Support events, briefings, meetings and calls related to issue advocacy campaigns.

Responsibilities-Communications (40%)

Serve as a regular contributor to blogs and social media.
Work with senior staff to regularly update the Leagues website.
Support events, briefings, meetings and calls related to the communications program.
Assist in the development and distribution of press releases and announcements.


Degree in Historic Preservation or equivalent.
Passion for historic preservation and public policy.
Familiarity with NYS government.
Curiosity, creativity, and research skills needed to assess and address emerging issues in the preservation field.
Strong background in electronic communications and social media.
Ability to effectively multi-task.
A professional demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
